So you have just booked your dream cruise of the Mediterranean for the summer. What an image! Visiting tiny harbours, passing rugged cliffs and exquisite beaches draped in sunshine with different cultures, cuisines and languages along the way. 

Now your next port of call is Civitavecchia on the west of the Italian coastline and more importantly its the arrival point of Rome and the Eternal City. Rome was known as the Eternal City even among the ancient Romans themselves. It was so called because the Roman people thought that no matter what happened to the world, no matter how many other empires might rise and fall, Rome would go on forever.

So this is it you are arriving into Rome and have the day! Although Rome wasnt build in a day, can you see Rome in a day? Well not exactly but to get a flavour for the city and visit the major attractions you can do.

Here is a lowdown of some of the possible shore excursions you can make and what you will see. So for those of you looking for the VIP treatment whats on offer:


1.) Civitavecchia Shore Excursion - Colosseum and Vatican Tour

This will begin with collection from the port with a guide and driver to bring you to Rome to Rome in approximately one hour and 10 minutes the ride is nice and you have the chance to see the cities outskirts and for sure some ruins along the way; Once in the city the tour will stop at the Colosseum where a  guide will be waiting for you. Prebooked tickets will be there ready for you so you will pass the lines with your guide and get direct access to the Flavian ampitheatre where the guide will explain its glorious and quite brutal history.

After the Colosseum the tour will continue to the Arch of Constantine, Circus Maximus, Teatro Marcello, Roman Forum and on towards the Trevi Fountain. Finishing off driving to the Vatican City to see St Peter's Basilca and square and also Castel St Angelo. A second variation for the excursion could be one more concentated on the Vatican with a tour of the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, St Peter's and  also some of Ancient Rome. Once again the driver would be there waiting for you on arrival at Civitavecchia and brings you directly to the entrance of the Vatican Museums where you would meet your guide and also again with the prebooked tickets to access the museums without standing in line which really is a blessing considering sometimes you can wait upto 2 hours to enter the museums. Once inside the guide will share the stories and secrets of the Museums masterpieces and treasures. From the Pinecone Courtyard, the Galleries of Map and Tapestries through the original Museum Pio Clementino, after visiting the breathtaking Sistine Chapel with The Last Judgment of Michelangelo. You will then pass to the  inside of the Basilica of Saint Peter and then to St Peter's square.

Then from the Vatican you will set off with your driver and guide towards the Colosseum where you will see the great Flavian Amphitheatre and learn about its fascinating history, you will not visit inside on this one. Moving on to the Arch of Constantine, Circus Maximus, Teatro Marcello and the Roman Forum. Finishing off the tour on foot with a walk to the magical Trevi Fountain and then you will be returned to Civitavecchia to board your cruise at the end of the day of sightseeing.


3.) Civitavecchia Shore Excursion - Rome In One Day

A third option would try to cover as many as the monuments as possible but also having time to relax with a sit down lunch. Your first stop would be to the Colosseum (no inside visit), the world's most impressive ancient amphitheater and then to the Arch of Constantine, Circus Maximus, Teatro Marcello,Roman Forum and Via Cavour.

You will then stop for lunch included in the tour and have the chance to try some real Roman food at a top local restaurant, find some delicious choices such as Spaghetti alla Carbonara, Bucatini all'amatriciana or even some local Pizza. Lunch includes one drink and coffee. After lunch you will take the opportunity to digest with a  walk to the Trevi Fountain (Don’t forget to throw a coin into the fountain to make sure you will return to Rome!), then towards the Pantheon with its incredible domed roof and on towards Piazza Navona one  Rome's most impressive piazza's and home to the street artists and painters. The tour will end at the Vatican in Saint Peter Square. The guide will give you the information about the church; if there is not line you can also make the entry into the Basilica on your own.

At the end of the afternoon our driver will bring your back to the port of Civitavecchia to board your cruise.
