Gallery Borghese

Found in the evocative setting of Villa Borghese, one of the most important and beautiful parks you should not miss during your stay here in Rome, is one of the best known mueseums in the world, Borghese Gallery.

It was built between 1613 and 1616, and it was the residence of cardinal Scipione Borghese, the nephew of Pope Paul V.
Relatively small, Borghese Gallery is a magnificent place that houses an incredible number of masterpieces signed by excellent artists such as Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Caravaggio, Domenichino, Guido Reni, Pietro Paolo Rubens and many more.

A spiral staircase will lead you in the expositive rooms. In these spaces you will spend the best hours of your life, admiring the breath-taking works of paintings and sculptures.

You can see the evolution of Bernini through his main sculptures: from The Goat Amalthea with the Infant Jupiter and a Faun, created when he was only a teenager; to Apollo and Daphne that will impress you for the nitpicking of details and its sense of movement; through Aeneas, Anchises, and Ascaniu, dated when he was 20 years old; and the David, characterized by David’s face biting his lower lip to express his effort and concentration; and finally you will reach the highest expression of Bernini's works: The Rape of Proserpina.

In this sculpture, the marble gives a realistic effect with the hand that goes 'into' Proseprina’s skin and the tears sculpted on her face representing her fear and desperation.

But in Borghese Gallery there’s not only Bernini; The Madonna and Child with St. Anne (Dei Palafrenieri), St. Jerome, David with the Head of Goliath: these are some of the main paintings of Caravaggio that you will see in Borghese Gallery.

The collection in this amazing gallery is enriched with many other famous artists such as Correggio, Veronese, Canova and Raphael.

Everything is surrounded by the great panorama of Villa Borghese with its English gardens and villas. Having a walk there will regenerate your soul and for a while you will forget you are in Rome, but, for a few moments, you will land in the Eternal City from one of the cities best panoramic points of view, especially at Sunset: the Pincio square.
