Description No trip to Italy is complete without a visit to Pompeii. This luxury Mercedes van tour from Rome will show you a city immortalized by a volcanic eruption, followed by authentic Neapolitan pizza and free time in beautiful Sorrento. Meet your driver at a convenient meeting point in the heart of Rome (details provided following reservation). Once seated comfortably, we depart for Pompeii, the once prosperous Roman city which met it's fate in October, AD 79 when Mt. Vesuvius erupted and the entire surrounding area and population was engulfed with burning pyroclastic flow and covered in ash. Upon arrival in Pompeii you will meet your expert archaeologist guide. We will distribute VR visors which will literally place you inside the ancient city before the devastating volcanic eruption, enabling you to toggle back and forth between past and present. Once you have experienced virtual Pompeii as it was in antiquity, we collect the visors so that you can embark upon your journey through the Pompeii of today. What you will see now is moments of terror frozen in time, death postures and ruins unchanged from almost two millennia ago. Your expert archaeologist guide will walk you down the long and ancient streets, whereabouts perfectly conserved ancient bakeries, shops, stalls, private and communal residences, public baths and brothels remain. You will see plaster casts of the unfortunate Pompeiians who were immortalized on that tragic day. Upon conclusion of the guided tour in Pompeii, we make our way to Sorrento, an exceptionally beautiful seaside town known as "Gateway to the Amalfi Coast". Enjoy once-in-a-lifetime views of the Tyrrhenian Sea and picture postcard perfect towns nestled into steep white limestone cliffs. Along the way, we stop at the area's most historic pizzeria, where Giggino and his family have been baking mouthwatering pizza "by the meter" in a wood fired oven for more than 100 years. During free time in Sorrento be sure to stop at one of the many botteghe and sample Limoncello, a world-renowned specialty liquor made by local artisans from the organic lemons which can only be harvested in this region. At this point you will be able to purchase a bottle or two to take home (or have it shipped) before enjoying a bite to eat and ample time to wander around the shops and scenic overlooks of Sorrento. As your afternoon winds down, you'll join your driver once again for the return trip to Rome. © Powered by: When In Rome Tours |
